Hi everyone, firstly a big apology for the mistake in lasts weeks newsletter. As many of you know I use my ipad for most of my work and for the weekly newsletter. I find this very convenient and it allows me to be really mobile and work anywhere on the newsletter during the week. The problem of course is that as I do the newsletter and review the newsletter sometimes things can be missed. Autocorrect is fantastic for most things but context isn't one of them and in this case it showed its volatility. I hope that has not spoiled the newsletter for you and I will always try and provide the best newsletter free of errors for you.
I am in full swing rebuilding my home lab now and getting the all new horizon suite up and running, for those following along this is part of my learning for my desktop certification that I am pursuing as part of my learning development for this year.

- Greetings KBTV fans and a very happy Friday to you! Today we have a new video for our VMware Fusion users which discusses and demonstrates installing Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) as a guest operating system in VMware Fusion 5 . A few things to point out before trying this out in your own environments: Apple’s End User License Agreement allows you to install up to two additional copies of Mountain Lion on your Mac, which is already running a retail version of Mountain Lion. You cannot install OS X…
- By: Matt Sarrel I recently started using the vSphere client to manage vCloud Connector (which according to VMware most people were doing anyway) – it’s a great alternative to the web interface I previously used for vCloud Connector. You can still use vcloud.vmware.com to evaluate vCloud with a 90-day free trial, browse listings of service providers, and use resources like message boards, support, and instructional materials (such as documentation and tutorials). The vCloud Connector 2.0 download…

- I came across a few discussions lately around using folders with vSphere Data Protection (VDP). If you have used VDP, I imagine you know that it is possible to select “container” objects such as a cluster or resource pool when creating a backup job. The question that continues to come up is “Can I select a folder when creating a backup job?” Well, the answer is a bit more complicated than yes or no… The VDP Administration Guide says a folder can be selected. With that in mind, I navigated to…
- By Steven Poitras, Solutions Architect at Nutanix, Inc. I recently had the opportunity to head over to the VMware HQ and conduct a white boarding session on the VMware Horizon Suite on Nutanix solution. When looking at the diagram in the solution video I noticed one thing, white space. Rather than having complex lines going to LUNs/IQNs or chassis to arrays or uplinks, all we had to show was the Horizon architecture, which is what we really care about. One “ring” to rule them all Obviously…

In this blog, let’s take a look at how to configure firewall policies to protect applications in the virtual datacenter by using a simple use case. - SHALL WE PLAY A GAME? In one of my favorite movies, the 1983 epic “War Games,” high school computer geek (a term ahead of his time) David Lightman (played by 21-year-old Matthew Broderick) wants to play an unreleased computer game — and impress a pretty girl (Ally Sheedy). So, he starts hacking…which wasn’t a coined phrase in the early 80s. Little does he know the “computer company” he’s infiltrated is actually a military installation running a missile-command supercomputer called the…

- The new database is opening up significant career opportunities for data modelers, admins, architects, and data scientists. In parallel, it’s transforming how businesses use data. It’s also making the traditional RDBMS look like a T-REX. Our web-centric, social media, and internet-of-things are acting as a sea-change to break traditional data design and management approaches. - In a recent blog post, we skimmed the surface of the journey from virtualization to IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) , but what exactly does ITaaS mean, and how important is it to the success of your enterprise? Mobility, cloud computing, social media, consumerization, big data and analytics have become deeply integrated into what makes up today’s enterprise. With this, the pace of IT change is rapidly increasing, resulting in a shift in the way organizations use and consume IT resources. More and more companies…
- Many of you will have read various articles related to queue depths, especially in the area of LUN/device queue depths, and how these can be tuned to provide different performance for your I/O. However there are other queue settings internal to the VMkernel, which relate to how many I/Os a Virtual Machine can issue before it has to allow another virtual machine to send I/Os to the same LUN. What follows is some detail around these internal settings, and how they are used to achieve fairness and performance…

- By Justin Venezia, VMware EUC Consultant Many folks who are implementing end user computing solutions (VDI, application virtualization, etc.) ask the same age-old question – “How can I be successful?” Well, the answer is quite simple – plan the work, work the plan. Jumping in with both feet and going right into the build and deployment of VDI, for example, may help you meet a tactical need and get you to a few hundred desktops. However, when you try to “scale” that environment, introducing…

- Mobile Location Based Services are on the rise. After several false starts back in the mid 2000s, every mobile user now depends on their phones to tell them where they are, where their friends are, and to engage with social media like Facebook and Foursquare . A report by Juniper Research suggests this market is expected to breach over $12 billion next year , where it hardly existed a few years ago at all. This is in part because mobile apps have become ubiquitous now. In order to remain relevant,…

- Ensuring your systems run smooth even when your data center has a hiccup, or a real disaster strikes is critical for many companies to survive when hardships befall them. As we enter the age of the zettabyte , seamless disaster recovery has become even more critical and difficult. There is more data than we have ever handled before, and most of it is very, very big. Most disaster recovery (DR) sites are in standby mode—assets sitting idle, waiting for their turn. The sites are either holding data…
- How is cloud computing delivering greater flexibility and reducing IT costs for business? VMware recently hosted IT industry analyst Maribel Lopez in an engaging live webcast, “Add Cloud to Your Business and Watch it Grow,” focusing on the benefits of cloud computing and why companies of all sizes are seeing growth as a result of moving more and more workloads to the cloud. Applicable to current VMware customers and others, this webcast focused on defining cloud, answered the question of “why…
- This was a recent question that was asked internally about the minimum privileges required to query VIBs on an ESXi host. The request was for a custom script that was developed for compliance check and the customer was looking to create a custom vSphere role to minimize the privileges needed to perform the task. Since I did not know the answer, it was off to the lab for some testing. Through the process of elimination, it turns out the only privilege that is required for querying VIBs on an ESXi host is…
