FROM THE EDITORS VIRTUAL DESK

Hi everyone, after such a hectic and exciting week last week this week has been rather more relaxing with a day off on Wednesday as a bit of a treat. I have been making some inroads on my learning path for VCP-DT and hope to have a lab running next week or so, watch this space. I have tried to expand the newsletter a bit more so even articles more related to VMware technology are being included,

His week I again have a guest post on security which really has become news for everyone with all the goings on in the spying world. Keeping our data and personal details safe and secure has become an important task. Read on for some further interesting information.

Have a great week.

Kind Regards

Neil Isserow

FEATURED ARTICLE

Utilising untapped resources to increase security

Customers have often been so focused on virtualising their server infrastructure that they have overlooked the other modules that are available to them.

Virtualising Security

Security for virtual environments needs to be adaptive and dynamic. This means that we need to promote employing products like vShield Endpoint so that we can offload Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware onto a dedicated virtual appliance, which increases security to the host and performance to the VM's.

The vShield Endpoint module is one module that is often overlooked by organisations because they think that their physical security appliances are performing the security role. It is also part of vSphere 5.1, so it can form part of any security strategy.

The best practise for securing the virtual environment is to have the security policy follow theapplication that needs protection. vShield App is designed to do just this function and will follow the application as it moves from host to host or cloud to host.

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: New Smart Bundle Solutions From HP and VMware Keep Virtualization Simple and AffordableVirtualization has been around long enough to be considered a “mature” technology, and at this point many organizations have taken advantage of virtualization to reduce costs, improve application availability and simplify IT management, among much else. Virtualization is effective not only for server consolidation, but also to reduce the cost…

Virtualize Business Critical Applications Blog: Estimating Availability of SAP on ESXi Clusters – ExamplesThis is a follow up to the blog I posted in Jan 2013 which identified a generic formula to estimate the availability, expressed as a percentage/fraction, of SAP virtual machines in an ESXi cluster.  The details of the formula are in this whitepaper . A service catalog is available for customers to pick up and request services from. Each service or set of services is managed by the “service manager/owner” role.
