From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone, hope your week has been productive. Mine has been a series of frustrating starts and stops with many of my planned activities but I think I am still getting further with my studies and other work regardless. I will be doing some blog updating for the newsletter specifically on the external blogs side from next week so you might see some new and interesting blogs and posts. Please let me know if I am missing any of your favourites.

Have a great week.

vCO Team: Get Supported Hardware Versions from ClusterQuite some time ago I had the need to retrieve the supported HW versions for an environment.. I don't remember what the project was, but it wasn't terribly important so I didn't bother digging deeper to figure things out - I just worked around the issue. Last month William Lam posted an article on how to do this with PERL. In this article ( Which Virtual Hardware Versions (VM Compatibility) Are Supported In vSphere? ), William gave a simple example using a PERL script to retrieve the desired…

VMware vSphere Blog: VXLAN Series – Multicast Basics – Part 2In the last post here , I provided some details on vSphere hosts configured as VTEPs in a VXLAN deployment. Also, I briefly mentioned that Multicast protocol support is required in the physical network for VXLAN to work. Before I discuss how Multicast is utilized in VXLAN deployment, I want to briefly talk about some of basics on Multicast. In the diagram below you see three main types of communication modes that are common in a network – Unicast, Broadcast and Multicast. Figure 1 Unicast mode (Fig1-A)…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: VMware #CloudOps Friday Reading List – Standardization in the Cloud EraI’ve been reviewing submissions for the Ops Transformation track at VMworld 2013.  It is a fascinating look at what a bunch of really smart people think is important in the cloud era.  Based on review of proposed panel discussions and breakout sessions, there seems to be some consensus that standardization is a key dependency for successfully deploying an automated and scalable service strategy. The quantity and variety of topics suggests there isn’t yet consensus on how the concept of…

VMware vSphere Blog: SIOC considerations with mixed HBA environmentsI’ve been involved in a few conversations recently related to device queue depth sizes. This all came about as we discovered that the default device queue depth for QLogic Host Bus Adapters was increased from 32 to 64 in vSphere 5.0. I must admit, this caught a few of us by surprised as we didn’t have this change documented anywhere. Anyway, various Knowledge Base articles have now been updated with this information. Immediately, folks wanted to know about the device queue depth for Emulex. Well, this…

VMware vFabric Blog: Breaking the Mindset: Why Hadoop Can and Should Move Past Bare-Metal Deployments to VirtualizationWhenever we’ve dealt with something for a while, our way of thinking about it becomes a habit. Hadoop deals with a lot of data. Currently, the record is 100 petabytes in a Facebook cluster that analyzes log data .  Since it was built by the likes of Google and Facebook to deal with such large data volumes and performance, it originally was built to run on bare-metal servers. Since it wasn’t an option from the get-go, the notion that you can’t have that much data running on a move-able virtual machine…

VMware End User Computing: VMware & Riverbed – Branch Office Virtual Desktops Faster than the Speed of Lightby Eric Carter, Director of Product Marketing, Riverbed Technology When it comes to delivering applications over the wide area network (WAN), bandwidth is a key factor in performance, but just as critical is network latency. Yes, as fast as it is, the speed of light imposes a speed limit. Data can only move so fast over distance and through devices that connect point A to point B. The reality of physics takes its toll especially on interactive applications such as desktop virtualization. The good news is…

VMware Accelerate: The Complexity of Choice and What it Means for ITAUTHOR: Daryl Bishop I recently listened to an interview with Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of Choice 1 . So what happens if consumers, for example, have seemingly unlimited choice? Schwartz’s hypothesis is that the sheer volume of choice in front of consumers today…
