From the editors Virtual Desk
Hi everyone, I have had a short week this week with local public holidays and some time off to relax. It has been really good and I have enjoyed the time. It was not all play though as I am still working towards my VCP-DT so still doing much with the new horizon suite and View in particular. I have also been spending a lot of time helping on the TAM VCP Stud Club in ANZ. This is now going into its third week and is going very well. There are around 60 members of the club all participating in various aspects of the club that suit them in order for them to obtain their VCP5 certification. I will keep you updated with the progress.
Hope you have a safe and productive week.
Best Wishes

VMWARE BLOGGERS
  • The following is an article from Eric Betts, who manages VMware’s Common Criteria certification program. Feed back to VMware’s announcement of vSphere 5.1 achieving “In-Evaluation” has been overwhelmingly successful.  However, it also caused quite a flurry of questions regarding the change in EAL level from EAL4+ to EAL2+ and questions on EAL4 vs. EAL2.  This blog posting will help with clarifying VMware’s position and overview of reform changes in-progress with Common Criteria. Information…

It provides the following benefits to your virtual environment: An integrated platform for managing VMware and third-party hypervisors from a single interface. A hypervisor choice for the different business units in your organization to accommodate their specific needs. No single hypervisor vendor lock-in. When you add a third-party host to vCenter Server,…

            • vSphere 5.1 Update 1 is now available. For those of you running 5.1, there are a lot of critical fixes and enhancements, so I’d urge you to review the release notes and consider scheduling a slot to upgrade your infrastructure to this new release. There are updates for both vCenter and ESXi in this release. Since this is the storage blog , I wanted to call out a few items which are directly relevant to storage and are addressed in 5.1U1, and these are features which I know a number of our customers have…

                • VMware released vCenter Orchestrator 5.1.1 As part of the vCenter 5.1 update 1. I rarely cover these updates on the blog since they are mostly bug fixes. This one is different since it includes some long due functionalities. I did ask for some of these and the dev team did an awesome job implementing them ! vCenter Orchestrator 5.1 provided a lot of new great features at the workflow designer level and integration with the vSphere web client I have detailed in this article . Still there were a few things…
                  • VMware vSphere Data Protection (VDP) is a backup and recovery solution that was introduced with vSphere 5.1. VDP leverages mature, proven technology from EMC Avamar to provide reliable, space-efficient, disk-based data protection for VMware virtual machines (VMs). VDP is fully integrated with VMware vCenter Server and the vSphere Web Client. One of the real beauties of VDP is its ease of deployment and management which explains why thousands of VMware customers have already downloaded VDP since it was…

                      • VMware has just released the much anticipated Update 1 patch for vSphere 5.1 which includes several updates and bug fixes for both ESXi and vCenter Server 5.1 . I highly encourage everyone to review the release notes for the complete list of resolved issues. While going through the ESXi 5.1 Update 1 release notes myself, I noticed a few resolved bugs that I had been following and thought I would highlight a few of them: Reinstallation of ESXi 5.1 does not remove the Datastore label of the local VMFS of an…
                        • As of this evening, both Site Recovery Manager and vSphere Replication have been updated and the 5.1.1 release is now available.  I strongly recommend this build as even though there is little in the way of new functionality, it is almost completely filled with things that make SRM and VR work better. Some of the fixed issues, for example, are things like: All sorts of timeout problems ranging from multiple operation timeouts to reprotect timeouts to HBA rescan timeouts Custom vCenter https ports now…

For example, GE is one growth-oriented company and just announced heavy investment in the Industrial Internet with GoPivotal . Mainframes are expensive to run, but the applications that run off of them are typically very important and the business can not…

My first thought was permissions, but I am logged in with an account that has administrative permissions so that was not the issue. My second thought was name resolution. Bingo! As with nearly all VMware solutions (and many other solutions), this particular task is dependent on name resolution. One of the first steps in the agent installation wizard is entering the name…

Innovation is thwarted because we feel like systems are out of our control and when they are, we don’t know what they are doing. We have to ask the network team to give us insight. Now, with vCAC we get the security back because we (the security people) can establish governance and control and sometimes this…
