From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I hope you have had as good a week as I have. I am currently on some annual leave in such a beautiful part of Australia, very close to Byron Bay. The weather has been awesome and I am having a fantastic time. I have been keeping up with many of the news items, not that I am just working but also relaxing. This week’s newsletter is jam packed with some excellent information for you so please read it as comprehensively as possible.

I am currently getting to grips with vCAC and ITBM which are technologies I am very interested in and with the growth of Hybrid Cloud believe they will become even more crucial to a successful datacenter that is managed across multiple boundaries in the future.

I hope you enjoy the newsletter and look forward to speaking to you again next week.

VMware End User Computing: Persistence Pays Off (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=5272)Guest blog by Lee Caswell, VP of Virtualization Products, Fusion-io Back when VDI started, the persistent desktop was king.  The first virtual desktop wasn’t that virtual at all since persistent hardware was dedicated to individual users.  But it was fast and it was secure. The downside of persistent desktops was cost.  Dedicated hardware gave way to shared storage and more efficient provisioning techniques, but the cost of a persistent desktop remained far above the cost of a physical desktop. …

Office of the CTO Blogs: Virtual SAN: Powerfully Simple and Simply Powerful (http://cto.vmware.com/?p=2605)Today, VMware is excited to highlight the upcoming release of Virtual SAN : a new kind of radically simple storage. It challenges long-held preconceptions about how storage should be done. It’s yet another proof point that the world is moving to a software-defined data center. Delivering Virtual SAN to market wasn’t easy. I’d like to share with you the story behind the story. When I arrived at VMware two years ago, I was given the charter to deliver the next generation of vSphere, our flagship…

Perhaps some of you early adopters are already running in full production, but we’re guessing many of you are just contemplating your major upgrade now. VMware’s Tech Support staff tend to see a surge during the month of March in number of calls to support. But guess what? Many of the issues we’re anticipating…

VMware vSphere Blog: What is perferHT and When To Use It (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11949)I’ve been involved recently in a couple situations in which the ‘perferHT’ advanced setting has been implemented, but for the wrong reasons. I want to re-clarify how and when it should be used. As with many advanced settings, it can be helpful or hurtful. The Myth “PerferHT exposes Hyper-Threading to the guest operating system” – False! vSphere present vCPU’s to the guest operating system and does not ever expose when those threads are scheduled onto a Hyper-Threaded SMT context. The guest…

VMware vSphere Blog: Can an admin peek inside my VM? (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=11938)A great question crossed my desk today from a customer. “Can a VI Admin who has root access to ESXi “abuse” their privileges and “peek” inside the guests of VM’s hosted on the server?” The short answer? If your ESXi admin has root or full administrator privileges, they can do anything. Nobody should be surprised by this! HOWEVER, you can mitigate, limit and monitor what is being done. But first, let’s quickly review what is meant by “peek inside the guest”. In the human world,…

VMware Hands On Labs Blog: Synchronizing Cloud Catalogs (http://blogs.vmware.com/hol/?p=777)This post is part 2 in a series on the backend processes we use to manage the Hands-on Labs. The first part is available here . Before I get into the guts of handling export, replication and import, I think it is important to understand how to identify which templates we need to work with. Sure, starting from scratch is simple: you have a bunch of templates in cloud A that you need to replicate to cloud B. Typically, that is going to take quite a bit of time. The problems involved with initial transfer to…

VMware vCloud Blog: Containing the Tempests in Teapots (http://blogs.vmware.com/vcloud/?p=3220)This is a guest post from Lilac Schoenbeck , VP of Product Management & Marketing at vCloud Service Provider, iland . Disaster recovery invokes emotions – the sadness around Hurricane Katrina. The fear around Hurricane Sandy. Even just the extreme discomfort of the Northeast power outage in 2003 (which feels like yesterday – I carried water up 11 flights of stairs. ELEVEN).  But, as rational humans, we tell ourselves that disasters don’t happen every day and they won’t happen to us. It’s a…
