From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone and welcome to this weeks newsletter from Sunny Brisbane, Queensland. Yes I am back from my short holiday and have had an extremely productive week back, with a few small but manageable hiccups on the way. There has been so much news, updated products and other announcements over the past few weeks and the newsletters have reflected all of this new information so as usual I urge you to spend some time reading the posts that are provided and if you require further information do not hesitate to contact your VMware representative.

With the release of new technologies such as Virtual SAN you will start to notice that the weekly KB articles are also expanding to include these new technologies, some of the KB articles are information focused as well as potential items to be aware of so check them out.

Have a fantastic week.

  • VMware Cloud Ops Blog: Top 5 Ways IT Can Stay Relevant in the Cloud Era (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=831)By Jason Stevenson You have heard it said that “rock and roll is dead.” The same could soon be said about your IT department. External pressures are driving an extinction of the IT department. Today’s business users are becoming more and more savvy, growing up with all kinds of technology in both the home and the office. Desk-side computing is dying off quickly, being left behind by technologies—like tablets, smart phones, and even wearable technology like eyeglasses and wristwatches—that make…

VMware ThinApp Blog: How to deploy AppLink packages in the enterprise (http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/?p=1706)AppLink is a great feature of ThinApp. The possibility to merge two or many packages together allows for a much more modular deployment model. But how do your deploy your AppLinks? I think we (read VMware) did ourselves a big disservice when we decided to add ;OptionalAppLinks=plugins\*.exe as a default setting in the package.ini file. Many out there now think it is required to use a folder called plugins relative to the parent package in order to use AppLink. This is far from true. Streaming…

Workstation Zealot: What’s Cool about the VMware KVM Utility. (http://blogs.vmware.com/workstation/?p=1081)VMware Workstation 10 comes with a handy utility which allows you to switch between active VMs (virtual machines) using a configurable hot key just like a KVM (Keyboard Video Mouse) switch. The benefit of using the VMware KVM utility is the VMs can be run in full-screen without launching the Workstation 10 interface (no tool bar) and manage their power state via CLI (command line interface). Another additional benefit from an IT perspective is running a virtual machine for the user when Windows is launched…

VROOM!: Power Management and Performance in VMware vSphere 5.1 and 5.5 (http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/?p=1805)Power consumption is an important part of the datacenter cost strategy. Physical servers frequently offer a power management scheme that puts processors into low power states when not fully utilized, and VMware vSphere also offers power management techniques. A recent technical white paper describes the testing and results of two performance studies: The first shows how power management in VMware vSphere 5.5 in balanced mode (the default) performs 18% better than the physical host’s balanced mode power…

VMware vSphere Blog: vSphere Distributed Switch, Traffic Filtering (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12166)When talking with customers about our vSphere Distributed Switch I often find that they don’t know about a feature in the Traffic Filtering policy engine that allows for creation of Access Control Lists or ACLs. This is in additional to being able to tag traffic and pass Quality of Service (QoS) or Differentiated services Code Point (DSCP) values up to the physical network for prioritization. ACL’s allow you to create fine grain control of what traffic is allowed in or out of a VM, set of VM’s or…

VMware vSphere Blog: VMware Virtual SAN: Cross Cluster Migrations (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12157)I was recently involved in a conversations with regards to Virtual SAN and virtual machine migration capabilities. One particular migration operation in question was around the ability to migrate virtual machines. From a storage solution perspective, Virtual SAN delivers a distributed shared datastore that is presented to all members of a…

VMware vSphere Blog: vSphere HA VM Monitoring – Back to Basics (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12076)In my experience as a customer, partner and working for VMware, I’ve found HA VM monitoring to be an incredibly helpful feature that I am consistently surprised is not used more. It is easy to turn on, provides an additional layer of protection for your VMs and just works. So why don’t more people use it? I am not going to be able to answer that question in this post, though I hope to provide enough information to get more people to try it out. First I’d like to briefly discuss what HA VM monitoring…

VMware Accelerate: Taking IT Out of the Shadows (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1916)by Barton Kaplan Wikipedia defines shadow IT as “systems and solutions built and used in organizations without explicit organizational approval…by departments other than the IT department.” It’s been a sore point for central IT organizations for a long time, and judging from the most recent data, it’s only getting worse. Gartner predicts that by 2015, 35 percent of technology spending will occur outside the central IT organization [1] . In a US$2.7 trillion industry [2] , that’s a big number.…

VMware vSphere Blog: PVSCSI and Large IO’s (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12145)Here’s a behavior that a few people have questioned me about recently: Why is PVSCSI splitting my large guest operating system IO’s into smaller blocks? By default ESXi’s behavior is to pass IO’s from the guest operating system as large as 32MB with the LSI vSCSI adapter (as long as the actual guest operating system doesn’t have a small default transfer size: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/9645697 ). However, the PVSCSI vSCSI adapter was designed to pass only 512KB IO’s, or smaller, so anything…
