From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I have had a very busy week. I am not sure how many of you area aware of the fact that there is probably a local VMUG chapter in your city. This week we hosted our local Brisbane VMUG users for an in depth deep dive on VSAN by our resident Staff Systems Engineer, Michael Francis which was very well received as were the obligatory pizza.

VMworld 2014 Session voting is live!

It is also time for you to vote (http://www.vmworld.com/voting.jspa) for the VMworld 2014 sessions you would most like to see. To do this head over to www.vmworld.com and either log in or register for an account. You will then be able to view all of the sessions that have been put forward and of course vote for your favourites. This year I too have a session. If you are interested in voting for it please feel free to check it out. You can find it easily by filtering on my surname. The session details are as follows:

Pro-active Solutions to Ensure Your VMware Environment is Stable and Available 100% of the Time

You rely on your entire enterprise being reliable and available. Running it on a VMware vSphere platform provides many benefits but there are still a number of tasks and solutions that we can use to ensure that everything stays up and working reliably. In this session, we will take a look at available solutions and pro-active tasks to assist with monitoring the environment, health assessments, regular benchmarking and metrics, patch management and working with VMware KB articles as tools to ensure your environment stays reliable and well maintained.

  • VROOM!: Virtual SAP HANA Achieves Production Level Performance (http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/?p=1814)VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger announced production support for SAP HANA on VMware vSphere 5.5 at EMC World this week during his keynote. This is the end result of a very thorough joint testing project over the past year between VMware and SAP. HANA is an in-memory platform (including database capabilities) from SAP that has enabled huge gains in performance for customers and has been a high priority for SAP over the past few years.  In order for HANA to be supported in a virtual machine on vSphere 5.5 for…

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: Debunking Myths About vSphere Data Protection (http://blogs.vmware.com/smb/?p=2791)This post originally appeared on the Virtual Reality blog and was written by Jim Armstrong The release of VMware’s vSphere Data Protection 5.5 (VDP) seems to have caused a stir in the virtual backup industry. It appears we have hit a soft spot with some of the other vendors offering backup solutions for vSphere and have seen some confusing messaging coming from our partners/competitors in this market. While we’re certainly proud of the technology partner ecosystem built around VMware solutions I would…

Workstation Zealot: Survived Microsoft XP end of support for now. (http://blogs.vmware.com/workstation/?p=1296)Well, it has been exactly one month since Microsoft ended XP support on April 8th, and no XPocalypse yet. Granted there have been a few recent nasty global security exploits, like Heartbleed and the recent zero day vulnerability in Microsoft IE that caused Microsoft to issue a special XP IE patch even though they stopped supporting XP on April 8th. Actually I was surprised to see the patch pop up on my XP build considering support officially ended. Moving off of Windows XP is not easy for companies that…

Team Fusion: Still Here…for Now (http://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/?p=1868)Microsoft Windows XP end of support (AKA the XPocalypse) has come and gone, and we are all still here. However, a recent Microsoft security alert should give Windows XP users cause for concern as it potentially exposes them to serious security risks. Luckily, Microsoft issued a patch on May 1 st – including Windows XP. The issue is that XP users can’t expect Microsoft to continue to provide security updates for their operating system as support officially ended on April 8 th . If you must continue…

VMware End User Computing: VMware Horizon and F5 BIG-IP Win Big (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=5725)Three times faster and 15.7% less expensive! By Cyndie Zikmund, End-User Computing Product Line Marketing Manager, VMware Architecting a VDI environment for high availability and optimum load balancing became easier this year when VMware and F5 announced their joint solution that included VMware Horizon with F5 BIG-IP. The expectation was that the two leaders in their respective markets would combine forces to provide a secure, scalable, and powerful platform for today’s mobile workforce, while…

Office of the CTO Blogs: The Cloud is the Device: Towards Ubiquitous End-User Computing (http://cto.vmware.com/?p=2728)Today I’m in Boston speaking at the IEEE: Rockstars of Mobile Cloud conference on the concept of “the cloud is the device.”  This talk was inspired by the AirWatch/VMware integration efforts I blogged about last week .  The title itself is an evolution of the tagline Sun used for years: “the network is the computer.” This tagline was a somewhat iconic description of Sun’s aspirations, where all computing intelligence lived on servers and applications were remotely delivered to…

Recently I posted about the new PowerCLI 5.5R2 capability to interact with the SRM API, and I want to write a few posts on using those capabilities to automate some typical (and perhaps some atypical) activities one might wish to accomplish. VMware End User Computing: Linked Clones the Easy, Scalable Way: Why View Composer Rocks (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=5741)By Cyndie Zikmund, Product Line Marketing Manager, End-User Computing, VMware In searching for information about View Composer, I found that VMware has not published many articles on this subject. When I asked around, I heard people say, “Composer just works,” or “It is a feature of View everyone knows how to use.” This led me to think that maybe the time has come for Composer to have its day in the sun on this blog. What Does Composer Do? Simple answer: It provides linked clones. Longer…

VMware End User Computing: Zero Day Threat: Hackers starting to target Windows XP (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=5738)By Sachin Sharma, Product Marketing Manager, End-User Computing, VMware Everyone in IT knew this day was coming: April 8, 2014. This was the official date that Microsoft ended support for Windows XP.  Business across the world had ample time to migrate their PCs from Windows XP to Windows 7, or even Windows 8. Many organizations put plans in place to get their systems off of Windows XP. Some organizations used manual processes, others used homegrown tools, and others used third party solutions that…

VMware vSphere Blog: Enabling and Monitoring Storage I/O Control (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12541)Storage I/O Control (SIOC) is one of those features that tend to get forgotten about. I’ve talked to many customers both while I was in the field doing architectures and deployments and still today and many either don’t know about the feature or never looked into it. SIOC is extremely powerful, it can increase your consolidation ratios on the storage side, allowing more VM’s per datastore. Which leads to lower storage costs and less administrative overhead. So how does it work? At a basic level…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: To Succeed in the Cloud, CIOs Must Look Beyond Technology (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=902)By Paul Chapman, VMware Vice President Global Infrastructure and Cloud Operations I’ve watched with interest as cloud solutions and services have matured in recent years to offer more agility, cost optimization, security, and quality of service for the full range of enterprise needs. Yet I continue to see many businesses adopt cloud services in an ad hoc—rather than holistic—fashion. This is often driven by business leaders who feel the systems they need can not be delivered fast enough by corporate…

VMware Accelerate: Competing with Shadow IT (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1977)By Daryl Bishop Over the last few years, business units have increasingly been bypassing IT and ordering services directly from external service providers (e.g., SaaS applications and cloud IaaS services). IT has been largely oblivious to this threat, believing that the business will continue to rely on IT for technology services. We’re now seeing the next stage of shadow IT with business openly bypassing IT, in fact the business model for some external providers is now purposely built around dealing…
