From the editors Virtual Desk

Hi everyone, I had had a busy few weeks and have been kept busy with some additional proof of concepts at my customers which I have really enjoyed. I have also managed a few critical SRs and this has reminded me of the value of our support organisation and how much value they can bring when teamed up with a TAM at an account. The addition of the TAM brings many benefits and one of these is the assistance and management of support cases and escalations directly with both the customer and VMware support ensuring that both parts are provided clarity throughout the process in terms of their obligations and responsibilities to ensure a successful resolution for all.

Onwards to all of this weeks news.

Best Wishes

  • VMware Cloud Ops Blog: The Illusion of Unlimited CapacityBy: Andy Troup  I was at a customer workshop last week, and I used a phrase that I’ve used a few times to describe one of the crucial capabilities of a successful cloud computing service, namely “The Illusion of Unlimited Capacity.” It got a bit of a reaction, and people seemed to understand the concept quite easily. So apart from its sounding quite cool (maybe I should get out more), why do I keep on using this term? Well, in cloud computing, we all know that there is no such thing as unlimited…

VMware vCloud Blog: Solution to a “Mostly Cloudy” ProblemThis is a guest post from vCloud Service Provider, Logicalis . By:  Steve Pelletier Have you ever had an IT project that you thought would be ideal to put into a public cloud except for one or two requirements that cloud providers just can’t seem to meet?  I like to refer to these as “mostly cloudy” projects.  As Logicalis has developed its public cloud infrastructure, we’ve had many customers approach us with just this type of project.  An increasingly large proportion of those clients are…

Who would put a necktie in the paper shredder? It might be someone who was not paying enough attention and let their necktie dangle…

VMware Cloud Ops Blog: What Do We Mean by IT Services in the Cloud Era?By Kevin Lees You hear it all the time from cloud evangelists: instead of delivering based on projects, IT should now be delivering around a common set of services. It’s not a new idea—but cloud computing promises to finally make it a reality. Before we get too excited, though, we should ask: what do we actually mean by cloud services? That’s not something cloud advocates always make clear. So here’s an example: The other week I was talking with a customer who runs a cloud that supports…

Office of the CTO Blogs: The Open Software-Defined Data Center IncubatorAs I’ve shared before, the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) has been engaged for many years in the development of IT infrastructure management standards. Beyond this activity, the DMTF also developed standards for virtualization and cloud management that have now been adopted on a national and international level . These standards have…

VMware vSphere Blog: Proving Performance: Hadoop On vSphere – A Bare Metal ComparisonWhen architects think about putting big data and Apache Hadoop  on virtualized commodity servers they usually see virtualization as a performance deterrent.  Virtualization software is just that—software. In a recent performance study by VMware , they demonstrated that performance between bare-metal deployments and virtualized deployments can even exceed bare-metal performance in certain cases when using multiple…
