VMware vSphere 5.5

http://books.shoeisha.co.jp/book/b181754.html

ところで、VCAP(VMware Certified Advanced Professional) というのは、

  • DCA = Data Center Administration
  • DCD = Data Center Design

http://labs.hol.vmware.com/HOL/catalogs/

  • HOL-SDC-1410 - Virtualization 101
  • HOL-SDC-1402 - vSphere Distributed Switch from A to Z

[VMware vSphere

RDM

$

A Raw Disk Mapping (RDM) can be used to present a LUN directly to a virtual machine from a SAN. Rather than creating a virtual disk (VMDK) on a LUN, which is generally shared with other VMs and virtual disks.

The reasons for doing this should purley be for functional and management reasons, NOT performance. There is a mis-understanding that RDMs offer greater performance compared to VMDK's on a VMFS datastore. I've seen lots of vSphere environments that have gone over kill on RDMs for SQL servers and the like for "performance reasons", its difficult to manage! If your looking for improved storage performance look into the VMware Paravirtual SCSI (PVSCSI) adaptor.

The main reason for using an RDM should be as follows:

  • To utilize native SAN tools and commands
  • If using Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS), Failover Clusters or other clustering solution.

There are two RDM modes to be aware of:

  • Virtual compatability mode provides vSphere snapshots of this virtual disk.
  • Physical compatability mode allows the VM to pass SCSI commands direct to the storage system LUN. This allows it to leverage SAN specific features such as interation with the SANs own snapshot functions.

Bringing RDM visible to multiple VM's

First mount the RDM LUN or LUN's to First VM, now on second VM go to edit setting and choose option " Add Existing Hard drive" and browse the RDM pointer drive of First VM and add into it.

Note: If you want to share disks between VMs you'll have to configure a separate SCSI controller for these RDMs on which you set the SCSI bus sharing policy so that sharing is possible:

Assigning Static MAC address to othere VM after Migration (P2V)

$

MAC address is not accepting and conflicting , which result its not powering on on destination VC (SEDNT2145)

Cause:

This issue occurs when the virtual machine has been configured with a static MAC address in the 00:50:56:xx:xx:xx range. VMware vCenter Server 5.1 and later detects this as a protected range and refuses to power on the virtual machine.

In vSphere 5.1 and late new policies have been implemented where the statically assigned MAC addresses can only be in the range 00:50:56:[00-3F]:XX:XX or other non-VMware OUI addresses.

Prefix- and range-based MAC address allocation is supported only in vCenter Server 5.1 or later.

This implies that if you add pre-5.1 hosts to vCenter Server 5.1, and use anything other than VMware OUI prefix- or range-based MAC address allocation, virtual machines assigned MAC addresses that are not VMware OUI prefixed fail to power on their pre-5.1 hosts.

Now, from what we’ve seen, the restriction is a little more detailed than what is described above. Static MAC addresses in vSphere 5.1 must be in the range 00:50:56:[00-3F]:XX:XX. If the MAC addressed is prefixed with 00:50:56 but it is outside of the [00-3F]:XX:XX range, it is still considered invalid and the VM will fail to power on.

Resolution:

We have done some modification into VMX file of Virtual machine. By below change VM will not try to detect Static MAC which is aligned to VM from outside Network with other VM's and because of that VM associated MAC will not conflict with any other and will poweron the VM.

We have added below line in ethernet phase of VMX file by unregister and re-register the VM to ESXi

ethernet0.checkMACAddress = “false”

After this issue got resolved and VM turn on gracefully.

Uninstalling VMware tools Manually from VM

$

Ever had the problem where you either have a corrupt copy of VMware Tools that can’t be updated or you perform an update and the install fails part way through leaving remnants behind?  These remnants then stop you from reinstalling VMware Tools and you are presented with the following error messages:

A previous version of VMware Tools is already installed

Error 1316 A network error occured while attempting to read from the file C:WindowsInstalledVMware Tools.msi

Even an uninstall doesn’t always work so unfortunately you’ll have to revert to to manually removing the items from the registry and file system that are stopping a new install from taking place.

The process to resolve this is simple and the following has been taken from VMware’s Knowledge Base article here.  I found that performing these steps helped resolve this problem for me.

  • Open the Windows Registry editor. Click Start > Run.
  • Type regedit press Enter.
  • Browse to HKLM SoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionuninstall. Search for the branch with a key named DisplayName and has a value of VMware Tools . Delete the branch associated with that entry. Do not delete the entire uninstall branch.
  • Browse to HKLMSoftwareClassesInstallerProducts . Search for the branch with the key named ProductName and has a value of VMware Tools . Delete the branch associated with that entry.
  • Browse to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTInstallerProducts . Search for the branch with the key named ProductName and has a value of VMware Tools . Delete the branch associated with that entry.
  • Browse to HKLM SoftwareVMware.  Delete the branch called VMware Tools .
  • Ensure the folder located in %ProgramFiles%VMwareVMware Tools is deleted.
  • Attempt to install the new version of VMware Tools, if applicable

Managing a VMware vCenter Server running on VM

$

Just wanted to share a couple of pointers which came up during a vSphere design review process for a customer.

During my discussions there were arguments around tracking of the vCenter Virtual machine in a big environment and getting on to it for troubleshooting in case the vCenter Server service or the VM is down can be a little time consuming.

Therefore, some of the organizations prefer a physical vCenter to have more control and a single point to look at and troubleshoot in case of issues. I would say this has more to do with comfort and mindset of the admin, that the application managing the virtual environment itself is not virtual and isolated from the virtual infrastructure.

I would not say that these points are not valid, since no one would like to search for there vCenter VM in case of vCenter downtimes. If you have not planned the initial placement of the vCenter VM, then you might end up logging on to each ESXi server directly via vSphere Client and search for your vCenter VM. This can be a cumbersome and time consuming process. This might actually affect services such as VMware view or vCloud Director for a longer duration in case of vCenter Downtimes, given that you do not use vCenter Heartbeat in your infrastructure.

There are a couple of things which every vSphere Design with a Virtual vCenter should consider:-

a) Separate Management Cluster - In slightly bigger setups where you might end up having multiple clusters of ESXi servers and multiple different management virtual machines, such as storage management appliances, vCloud director or SRM machines, you should have a separate management cluster of 2 to 3 ESXi servers (size them as per your requirement). Here is where you place for vCenter Server as well. Isolated from your production environment and also easy to track and troubleshoot in case of vCenter server   fails due to any issues.

b) DRS rules for vCenter VM - You may or may not have the liberty of creating a separate management cluster. However, it is absolutely recommended to use DRS rules to control the placement of your vCenter Virtual Machine.

You should use the DRS rule of "Virtual Machine to Hosts" in order to place the vCenter VM on the FIRST host of the FIRST Cluster in your vCenter. This is possible with the DRS rules and this will ensure that your vCenter server is always running on the same ESXi server and only in case of that ESXi server failing, the VM powers onto the next host in the cluster using vSphere HA. This method will ensure that you have only one ESXi server to look at in case your vCenter Server is acting up and you can trace the VM easily.

This is how you can achieve this:-

1- Right click on the first cluster of your vCenter Server (Assuming vCenter VM is a part of this cluster).

2- Click on Edit Settings.

3- Under DRS > Click Rules > Add.

4- Click the DRS Groups Manager tab.

5- Click Add under Host DRS Groups to create a new Host DRS Group containing the first host of the cluster.

6- Click Add under Virtual Machine DRS Groups to create a Virtual Machine DRS Group for the vCenter VM

7- Click the Rule tab, from the Type drop-down menu, click Virtual Machines to Hosts.

9- Select the Virtual Machine DRS Group which you created in the previous steps and the Host Groups which you created and you are done.

After saving this setting the vCenrer VM will automatically migrate to the host which you selected using vMotion and would stay there, making it easy and simple for you to locate in case of vCenter downtime.

Just for a recap here are the settings:-

Last but not the least you need to ensure that you keep the Virtual Machine Restart Policy for vCenter Server in case of an HA event, as the highest priority so that the vCenter VM is up as soon as possible.

Duncan and Frank in there book mentioned a valid point:-

"Although HA is configured by vCenter and exchanges virtual machine state information with HA, vCenter is not involved when HA responds to failure. It is comforting to know that in case of a host failure containing the virtualized vCenter Server, HA takes care of the failure and restarts the vCenter Server on another host, including all other configured virtual machines from that failed host.
There is a corner case scenario with regards to vCenter failure: if the ESXi hosts are so called “stateless hosts” and Distributed vSwitches are used for the management network, virtual machine restarts will not be attempted until vCenter is restarted. For stateless environments, vCenter and Auto Deploy availability is key as the ESXi hosts literally depend on them."

Hence, it is important you ensure that vCenter comes back up on high priority in case of an HA event. This will get the management network going in case of a Distributed vSwitch and Auto Deploy to work... However with vSphere 5.1, you do have an option to boot the ESXi server with a backup copy of ESXi which you can save on the local drive if available on the server.

Backup and restore an ESXi host configuration using the ESXi command line

Hello,

if you want to backup the host configuration using the command line, you can execute this two commands:

  1. vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/sync_config (In order to save/sync the host configuration)
  2. vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/backup_config (to backup the configuration)

The last command had better output something similar to this:

Bundle can be downloaded at : http://*/downloads/configBundle-localhost..tgz

Then, the backup can be downloaded connecting to this URL: http://IP_of_the_ESXi_Host/downloads/configBundle-localhost..tgz

If you want to restore the backup, this steps must be done:

  1. vim-cmd hostsvc/maintenance_mode_enter (put the host in maintenance mode)
  2. vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/restore_config /tmp/configBundle.tgz (restore the backup using the backup file. Before, the backup file must be uploaded to a location accessible by the host)

I got this information from this vmware's kb:

VMware KB: Backing up and restoring ESXi configuration using the vSphere Command-Line Interface and vSphere PowerCLI…

And, we can call it a day!

Pablo

https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Platform-Whats-New.pdf

user=vpxuser

user=vpxuser:<ADのドメイン名>\<ユーザ名>

https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Platform-Whats-New.pdf

FT Server

smp-ft-01.png

smp-ft-02.png

smp-ft-03.png

Importance of having Windows Error Reporting feature & how it helped in troubleshooting the VCenter service start up issue

$

Would like to share about an incident we faced with VCenter service start up issue & how it was resolved.

Last week there was VCenter service start up problem with my colleague's environment after it was upgraded to version 5.5 few days prior to the issue. While we start the VCenter service it was getting to a starting state and after few minutes to stopped state. No dmp file generated  by vpxd.exe crash, we carried out normal process, procedures step by step to troubleshoot the issue. By analyzing vpxd log, we confirmed that service is getting started initially and getting through the DB authentication as well. But finally getting terminated saying some directories could not be accessed  & we tried all possible ways and lastly we decided to re install VCenter server and map it to the existing SQL DB.

Before we proceeded, while trying out Google came to see that we can able to set the WER ( Windows Error reporting feature ) where it gets the application services crash dumps in general. By design or Luck  we had this feature enabled already in our VCenter server. Refer the LINK for complete configuration of WER ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb787181(v=vs.85).aspx )

And as per the article we had a vpxd.dmp dump file in the configured location %LOCALAPPDATA%\CrashDumps.

On check the dumps, the logs matched with the VMWare KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2065630

The cause for the issue it has been said VCenter Server performs a validation on its Inventory data fails due to the excessive snapshots & as a workaround to change the <ThreadStackKb> size to 1024 in the vpxd.cfg file under thread pool section.

But we were not really sure if that is the case with the environment though we went and did the change as per the KB and it did the trick. We had 512Kb by default.

After it got fixed we carried out a check throughout the environment and found lots of VM’s running with snapshots & that is due to poor design of Roles & Permissions planning where users having full permissions on the VM’s doing all these nasty things. Finally environment was revisited with respect to roles and permissions & got the access restrictions applied.

Regards,

Arvinth Rajkumar Ravi.

Topic: How to Build Service-based Cost Models with VMware vRealize Business

Would you like to be the strategic partner of your organization's CFO and CEO?

To accelerate your efforts to align business goals with IT capabilities, you must provide cost transparency both internally and back to the business, and that means your organization requires an in-depth understanding of the costs associated with delivering IT services

Today's service managers/owners must be more than tech-savvy; they must also be financially savvy. The ability to quickly re-engineer the cost model to align to a service-oriented and customer-centric model is a critical step in the IT transformation journey.

Khalid Hakim - Operations Transformation Architect  at VMware will help answer the following questions:

Are your service managers involved in managing their service financials? Is your current cost model based on expense codes, cost centers, cost by department or cost by customer? Do you do arbitrary cost cutting or allocation? Are you challenged by cost optimization goals? Can your service managers and IT leaders defend their numbers?

Optimize Resources by Right-Sizing Your Virtual Machines - By Jason Gaudreau
http://blogs.vmware.com/tam/2015/01/optimize-resources-right-sizing-virtual-machines.html

Virtualizing helps data centers provide rapid deployment and increased business continuity, and provides a tremendous amount of capital savings with the reduction of hardware. However, with the substantial benefits and ease of deployment comes virtualization sprawl and resource proliferation. “Right-sizing” is the process of reclaiming underutilized resource components, such as compute and memory resources. In conjunction, there should be a process in place to validate that a guest virtual machine is still required by the business—this is typically considered a re-certification…[read more]

https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Platform-Whats-New.pdf

ft-vmdk-01.png

ft-vmdk-02.png

List independent vdisks using powershell/powercli in ESXi

Hello,

in order to list the vdisks of type independent, you can use this powercli code:

$allvms = Get-VM | where-object {($_.powerstate -ne "PoweredOff")}

foreach ($vm in $allvms | Get-View){

  foreach($dev in $vm.Config.Hardware.Device) {

    if(($dev.GetType()).Name -eq "VirtualDisk") {

      if($dev.Backing.DiskMode -eq "independent_persistent") {

        $vm.Name + "`t" + $dev.Backing.FileName

        $vm.Name + "`t" + $dev.Backing.DiskMode

            }

        }

     }

}

(As usual, remember to use the Connect-VIServer cmdlet before!)

Best regards,

Pablo
