Hi everyone, we have had a very busy week with plans and preparations for the annual Super Bowl competition taking place. Of course many of us are involved in this event but let's take a moment to discuss how having a VMware TAM works in your favor during these critical times.

If a TAM has a customer that is involved in the event, the TAM will work with the customer to understand many aspects of how the event will affect their business. This could be from change freeze's to special projects, security and many other items. Of course any of our customers that play a supporting role during the event will also need special attention as they want to ensure that their systems stay up and running. As TAMs we work with the customer and our support services to update them on the details and ensure that the customer is provided with the required timely support, but additional details as required for this event are also well communicated to our support services.

The VMware TAM Service is a partnership, one that we all take very seriously and understanding our customers business and objectives goes a long way in ensuring that they have the highest level of support during these critical times.

Just would like to share some thoughts that I have come across during my new research.

If in future we are upgrading VMware environment to 6.0 U1b (build 3380124) then we can get a big problem for VM templates that we use to provision new systems.

As soon as VMware Tools is updated on any templates we will no longer be able to clone those templates. If we’ve updated any templates with the version of VMware Tools that comes with ESXi 6.0 U1b then we need to uninstall it and reinstall the prior version that came with ESXi 6.0 build 3247720. After the couple of reboots that we have to go through with an uninstall and reinstall of VMware Tools we will find that we can now clone VM’s and have them automatically customized.

This update just in from VMware Support “VMware Engineering have confirmed that the issue is dependent on the install/upgrade sequence. Specifically, the issue is aligned to the version of deploypkg.dll in the vmtools package. GSS and Engineering are mapping the ESX and vmtools update versions to the deploypkg.dll versions to confirm which upgrade sequences are problematic. A KB article will be published once this information is finalized.”

Hi everyone, I am a big fan of certification. I think that it is a great way to confirm the skills that I have gained and provide proof of my skills. VMware provides many different certification paths but one of the most well known and still sought after is the VCP. This week our TAM blog focuses on the VCP6 and how to prepare to take this certification. Hi everyone, welcome to March 2016 and our ninth newsletter for the year. Yes we have again already had a newsletter each week and just like years gone by we will try our best to provide you with a newsletter with the best VMware news each week. This week I was reading a new blog post by William Lam on the future of the ESXi Embedded Client (The future of the ESXi Embedded Host Client). While this is interesting in it's own right and worth reading it reminded me of why I love working for VMware, there are just so many people at VMware always pushing the boundaries of what we think we can do and surprising us and our customers each and every day.

While setting up a new NSX 6.2.2 / vCenter 6.0u3 lab, I was receiving the following error (in vSphere) when trying to install NSX VIBs under "Host Preparation":

"XXX eam.agent.enable.label not found XXX"

For my environment I had not (yet) installed Update Manager so it *should* have connected directly.

I ended up deploying VUM as a test, but still failed.

Eventually figured out that I had not set DNS server entries on the ESXi hosts - since when I installed ESXi, I did not yet have AD/DNS VM built...

So, if you find this page, verify you can resolve the vCenter by name from your ESXi hosts...

「vMotion 用」「FT 用」... といった設定ができるという話です。

「Tag」とあるので vSphere5.1 の vCenter インベントリのタグの話かと思ったら違いました。

以前の ESXi では、VMKernel ポートの Tag 設定を

vSphere Client や API などで設定する必要があったのですが
ESXi 5.1 からは、esxcli コマンドでも設定できるようになったようです。
(esxcli も、version 5.1 です。)

ためしに、vMotion と FT の設定をしてみました。

ブログ記事にならって実行元は vMA ですが、

vCenter ではなく、ESXi （IP アドレスは192.168.5.61）に対して実行しています。

ESXi のユーザとパスワードは、入力を省略するために環境変数で設定しておきます。

vi-admin@localhost:~> export VI_USERNAME=root
vi-admin@localhost:~> export VI_PASSWORD=******
vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 system version get
   Product: VMware ESXi
   Version: 5.1.0 ★ESXi のバージョンも 5.1 です。
   Build: Releasebuild-838463
   Update: 0

まず、今の設定を確認します。

vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag get -i vmk0
   Tags: Management  ★現在のタグは「管理トラフィック」だけです。
vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag get -i vmk1
   Tags: Management

1回のコマンド実行で、1つずつタグを追加できます。

vmk1 に、「vMotion」と、「Fault Tolerance のログ」（FT）を追加してみます。

vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag add -i vmk1 -t VMotion
vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag get -i vmk1
   Tags: Management, VMotion  ★vMotionが追加された。

vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag add -i vmk1 -t faultToleranceLogging
vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag get -i vmk1

ちなみに、GUI（vSphere Client）で vmk1 の設定を見ていると、

esxcli の設定は、下記の画面を開いたままでも即時反映されました。

削除は、remove です。これも1タグずつ実行します。

FT だけ削除してみました。

vi-admin@localhost:~> esxcli --server 192.168.5.61 network ip interface tag remove -i vmk1 -t faultToleranceLogging

以上、VMkernel ポートのタグづけの話でした。

Since vRO7 the Log4j Syslog Appender has been deprecated and will be removed. That’s not really a cause for panic as we can use the Log Insight Agent to forward your log files to the Syslog Server.

There are a few catches on the way.

First we need to configure the forwarding:

1. Login to the Orchestrator Control Center
2. Go to Logging Integration
3. Tick the box next to Enable logging to a remote log server to configure Syslog
4. Select Use Log Insight Agent
5. Enter your FQDN or IP of your Syslog server as well as port 514.
6. Select the Syslog Protocol.
7. Click on Save

The Log Insight Linux Agent sends the logs via TCP (not UDP) so you may need to adjust your Syslog server

After you have configured the Log Insight settings in the Control Center you still need to configure the Log Insight Linux Agent and tell him what logs to pass on. To do this follow these steps:

1. Connect to Orchestrator via SSH
2. Edit the file /var/lib/loginsight-agent/liagent.ini
3. Add the following entries at the end:

[filelog|scripting]

directory=/var/log/vco/app-server

include= scripting.log; scripting.log.*

[filelog|server]

directory=/var/log/vco/app-server

include=server.log;server.log.*

1. Restart the log insight agent with the command 
   service liagentd restart
2. Check the logfiles for errors
   /var/log/loginsight-agent/liagent_[date].log

This should now forward all the Server and Scripting logfiles to your syslog server. All Orchestrator logfiles can be found at kb.vmware.com/kb/1010956.

The wait is over (almost). Since the introduction of vSphere Web Client, many admins have slowed down the adoption of the Web Client as well as updates to vSphere due to the performance of said client.

VMware has released a couple of flings in relation to this problem. One of them was the host web client, where you can manage your hosts directly without the need to install the vSphere client. This fling is now part of the latest update to vSphere 6.0 U2. A few days ago, VMware released a similar option for vCenter. Both of these options are based on HTML 5 and javascript.

Host Web Client

Like I mentioned before, starting with vSphere 6.0 U2, the host web client is already embedded into vSphere. If you do not have this update you can still download the OVA and access the host web client that way. Currently it only works if you have vSphere 6.0+ but once version 5.5 U3 is released, it will also work with that version. Here is a link to download the fling.

To access the web client, you will need to add "/ui" at the end of the name/ip address of your host. For example https://<host-name-or-IP>/ui

The client is very responsive and has a nice UI. Not all the features are currently supported, but more will be coming at some point in the near future.

vCenter Web Client

This HTML web client is only available as a fling at the moment. You will need to deploy an OVA and register the appliance with the vCenter that you would like to manage. Being a fling, not all features are included. It basically focuses on VM management, but I am sure they are working to port all the features over at some point (I hope).

To deploy this ova, you will need to enable SSH and Bash Shell on your VCSA. You can do both from the VCSA web UI. If you are running Windows based vCenter refer to the Fling documentation here.

Prior to going through the configuration you will need to

1. Create an IP Pool (If deploying via C# Client)
   • Note: I deployed using Web Client and didn't create the IP Pool for me automatically as it is supposed to, so double check you have an IP Pool before powering on the appliance
2. Deploy the OVA

After deploying the OVA, creating an IP Pool, and enabling both SSH and Bash Shell on VCSA, it is time to configure the appliance.

• SSH to the IP address you gave to the appliance using root as the user and demova as the password
• Type shell to access Bash Shell
• run the following command in Bash Shell
  • /etc/init.d/vsphere-client configure --start yes --user root --vc <FQDN or IP of vCenter> --ntp <FQDN or IP of NTP server>
• If you need to change the default password for your root account, you can run the following command from bash shell
  • /usr/bin/chsh -s "/bin/bash" root
• answer the question by answering YES
• and enter the credentials for your vCenter

The HTML Web Client is pretty awesome, I gotta say, even if not all the features are there yet. It is super clean, and responsive. I can't wait for it to be embedded with a full feature set.

今回は Horizon Air におけるインターネット分離における注意点について紹介します。

インターネット分離とは、業務で使う社内端末や基幹系システムをインターネットと分離することを本ブログでは意味しています。

仮想デスクトップ（VDI）導入

業務端末をインターネットから分離する場合でも、メールのやり取り、ウェブブラウザでの情報検索、ウェブベースの業務アプリケーションなどインターネット を使わないと仕事にならない業務が多いのが現状です。

そこで仮想デスクトップ（VDI）環境を導入し、インターネットを使う業務は業務端末から VDI 環境 へログインした上で VDI 上で行うことにすれば業務端末はインターネットから分離したままにすることができます。

クラウド上のVDI環境との接続

サーバなど機器の購入や機器を設置するデータセンターの契約をすることなく、簡単に導入できるのがクラウド上の VDI 環境であり、VMware Horizon Air もその中の 1 つです。

接続方法として IPSec VPN または閉域網を活用した Direct Connect が使えるため、クラウド上の VDI 環境へセキュアに接続ができます。

SSL証明書の実装

Horizon Air にはポータルサイトがあり、管理者が仮想デスクトップを管理したり、ユーザが仮想デスクトップにアクセスするときに必ずポータル サイトにアクセスします。

ポータルサイトはブラウザでアクセスしたり、端末にインストールする仮想デスクトップ接続用のクライアントアプリケーション (VMware Horizon Client) からアクセスします。

ポータルサイトへのアクセスをセキュアにするためにポータルを管理するサーバに SSL 証明書をインストールしますが、インターネット分離の環境ではこの SSL 証明書に関連する動作に注意が必要です。

CRLとCTL

SSL 証明書は通常 Digicert など第三者の証明期間から発行されます。社内端末から仮想デスクトップ環境のポータルにアクセスすると、

SSL 証明書が有効なものであるかどうかを検証するために CRL（証明書失効リスト）と CTL（証明書信頼リスト） を確認します。

インターネット分離の注意点

ここで注意しなければならないのは「インターネット分離」によって、インターネットへのアクセスが遮断された社内端末はインターネット上にある CRL と CTL を参照することができません。

結果として社内端末上でポータルにアクセスしようとしているブラウザまたはクライアントアプリケーションはエラーを返 します。

SSL 証明書の検証を無視するように設定した場合はポータルアクセスできるものの、確認作業がタイムアウトするまでブラウザまたはクライアントア プリケーションは「応答なし」の状態になる場合があります。

ネットワーク環境によって違いはあるものの、CRL と CTL の確認のタイムアウトはそれぞれ 5 秒程度です。

また、一旦ポータルにアクセスして仮想デスクトップを使うようになった後も、定期的に SSL 証明書の検証が発生するため、数秒程度 「応答なし」の状態となる場合があります。

CRL に対するアクション

CRL の確認先は SSL 証明書によって異なります。発行機関の確認は下記サイトが参考になると思います。

CRL に対するアクションは以下の3つのいずれかが考えられます。

1. インターネット接続できる社内ファイルサーバで CRL を定期的に取得し、社内端末ログインスクリプトで CRL をそのサーバから取得して更新するように設定する。

2. インターネット接続できる社内ファイルサーバで CRL を定期的に取得し、社内 DNS を設定して CRL 確認先をそのサーバに向けるようにする。

3. 社内サーバで証明書を発行し、既存の証明書を置き換える

CTLに対するアクション

CTL の確認先を最新の CTL がダウンロードできる社内サーバに変更するか、CTL 更新動作の機能を無効することで対応可能です。下記サイトが参考になると思います。

今回は、Horizon Air で障害発生時の対処方法について紹介します。

Horizon Air 利用時の問題発生時に最初に確認すること

Horizon Air で問題が発生したときには、大きく分けて 2 つの問題発生ポイントがあります。

1. Horizon Air の管理コンポーネントなど、システム全体で問題が発生している

2. 特定の仮想デスクトップやユーザーで問題が発生している

Horizon Air の管理コンポーネントなどシステム全体で問題が発生している場合

Horizon Air の管理コンポーネントで問題が発生している場合には、ユーザーからは対処が難しい場合がほとんどです。

そのため、管理ポータルなどでエラーが発生していたり、意図したとおりに動作しない場合には、まずは VMware のサポートに連絡して対応が必要です。

この場合には、以下の情報を事前に用意しておくと、その後の問い合わせがスムーズに行えます。

// 事前に用意する情報

- サービス ID もしくは利用されている会社名

- 状況が確認できるスクリーンショット

特定の仮想デスクトップやユーザーで問題が発生している場合

この場合には、まずは問題が起こっている仮想デスクトップやユーザーの特定を行います。

特定方法は、Horizon Air の管理ポータルからアクティビティ ログを採取して確認します。

※ ブラウザの言語は英語で取得した方が、文字化けなどなくログを取得できます。

※ アクティビティ ログに接続した形跡が残っていない場合には、そもそも接続元と Horizon Air との通信に問題がある可能性があります。

特定のユーザーに問題がある場合には、AD 上のユーザーに問題がある可能性があります。

まずは AD 観点で調査を行い、その後、Horizon Air の管理ポータルでマッピング情報を確認してください。

特定の仮想デスクトップで問題がある場合の切り分けについて

1. 該当の仮想デスクトップをリセットして確認する

特定の仮想デスクトップに接続ができないなどの問題があれば、まずは Horizon Air の管理ポータルからエージェントの状態を確認します。

エージェントの状態が "Unknown" などになっていれば、まずは仮想デスクトップをリセットして、回復するかどうか確認しましょう。

それでも、事象が解消しない場合には、Horizon Air 管理コンソールを利用して直接該当の仮想デスクトップにアクセスして状況を確認します。

2. Horizon Air 管理コンソールでの表示を確認する

管理コンソールで仮想デスクトップに接続すると、コンソール画面を見ることができます。

この際、ログイン画面が表示されずに Windows のロゴやブート画面で止まっている場合があります。

この場合には、そもそも Windows が異常な状態になっている可能性が高く、復旧が難しい状況です。

仮想デスクトップの再作成の可否についてまずは検討してください。どうしても該当の仮想デスクトップが

作り直しが難しいような場合には、ひとまずサポートまでご相談ください。

3. 仮想デスクトップにログインして採取された情報から調査を行う

通常の接続はできず、管理コンソールのみからアクセスできる場合には、ログなどからの調査が必要となります。

ただし、問題の発生原因は Horizon Air 関連のモジュールだけではなく Windows 自体の影響の考えられます。

• 仮想デスクトップでのログの採取

- DaaSAgent のログの採取

- View Agent のログバンドルの採取

- Sysprep のログの採取

- グループポリシーの適用状況確認ログの採取

例: Windows 7 64bit の仮想デスクトップ環境上でのログ採取例

1. 管理コンソールからローカル アドミニストレーターでログインします。

2. 以下のファイルを採取します。

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware DaaS Agent\service\logs\DaaSAgent

3. 以下のバッチファイルを実行しデスクトップに作成されたログバンドルを採取します。

C:\Program Files\VMware View\Agent\DCT\support.bat

4. "C:\Windows\Panther" と "C:\Windows\System32\sysprep\Panther" から "setupact.log" と "setuperr.log" を採取します。

5. 管理者権限で以下のコマンドを実行し、作成された HTML ファイルを採取します。

     > gpresult /H GPO_export.html

• Horizon Air 接続端末でのログの採取

- View Client のログバンドルの採取

例: Windows 7 64bit から接続している際の接続端末上でのログの採取

1. 以下のバッチファイルを実行しデスクトップに作成されたログバンドルを採取します。

C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Horizon View Client\DCT\support.bat

4. VMware へサポートを依頼する

ログを確認しても明確に原因がわからずお困りの際には、VMware へ相談しましょう。

なお、サポート依頼を行う際には以下の情報を採取していただくとスムーズに調査が開始できます。

- 事象の発生日時および発生頻度

- 事象の発生対象のユーザー名/仮想デスクトップ名

- 事象が確認できるスクリーンショット

- Horizon Air の管理ポータルから採取されたアクティビティ ログ

- 上記 3 のログファイル一式

- 利用しているブラウザとそのバージョン

また動画や Windows であれば Windows 標準の問題ステップ記録ツールなどを利用して事象を確認する操作など
