VMware tool version 11 was released around Sep 19 which added features such as.

  • Ability to map a specific OS volume to the respective VMDK.
  • Updated drivers of PVSCSI, VMXNET3 & VMCI available through Microsoft Update Service for Windows Server 2016 & later.
  • Upgraded compiler in Visual Studio 2017 for VMware Tools drivers.
  • VMware Tools notarised for MacOS 10.14.5.
  • Added support for additional drivers for AppDefense.
  • Added appInfo to publish information about running applications inside the guest.

VMware tools have separate release cycles from that of vSphere since version 10. With mention to that, VMware Tools 11.0.6 update adds VMware tools with a new key/certificate pair for signing VMware tools ISO files. The old signing key/certificate is expired in the month of December 2019.

In case you download the VMware tools 11.0.6 from VMware download portal and install on ESXi hosts that are pre 6.5 U2 version, you will not be able to install or upgrade the VMware Tools service in virtual machines using the existing UI.

To fix this issue, either upgrade the ESXi hosts to version 6.5 U2 or later, else manual VMware tools installation/upgrade is required inside guest OS.
