From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, I am really excited to be attending our annual VMware vForum along with thousands of other enthusiastic virtualisation specialists next week. This is the 5th event I have attended as a VMware employee and for me it is the best event of the year and such an awesome way to end a stellar year. I love being able to interact with the myriad of customers and partners at the VMware stand, discuss in depth technology issues with them and show them the amazing solutions we have to offer.

This year as usual I will be presenting  session in what is called the All Access Pass area. This is an area for paid delegates and where we provide in depth sessions by subject matter experts in a much smaller forum where delegates can interact more with questions. I am looking forward to presenting my session details of which are below.

If you are at vForum this year in Sydney please send me an email to let me know and stop by the VMware stand and say hi.

And of course it is not too late to register and attend - http://info.vmware.com/content/APAC_ANZ_vForum

This week's newsletter has a focus on the coverage from VMworld Europe and is therefore an extended edition, lots to read and digest from an awesome event.

My Session details:

Date: Monday 21 October

Time: 1420 - 1500
Title: Pro-active solutions to ensure your VMware environment is stable and available 100% of the time

Synopsis: You rely on your entire enterprise being reliable and available. Running it on a VMware vSphere platform provides many benefits but there are still a number of tasks and solutions that we can use to ensure that everything stays up and working reliably. In this session, we will take a look at available solutions and pro-active tasks to assist with monitoring the environment, health assessments, regular benchmarking and metrics, patch management and working with VMware KB articles as tools to ensure your environment stays reliable and well maintained.

VROOM!: SEsparse Shows Significant Improvements over VMFSsparse (http://blogs.vmware.com/performance/?p=1616)Limited amounts of physical resources can make large-scale virtual infrastructure deployments challenging. Provisioning dedicated storage space to hundreds of virtual machines can become particularly expensive. To address this VMware vSphere 5.5 provides two sparse storage techniques, namely VMFSparse and SEsparse. Running multiple VMs using sparse delta-disks with a common parent virtual disk brings down the required amount of physical storage making large-scale deployments manageable. SEsparse was…

VMware vSphere Blog: Microsoft Operating System Time Sources and Virtual Hardware 10 (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10595)More recent versions of Microsoft operating systems contain the ability to detect if they are running virtualized or not.  This is accomplished through the checking of a CPUID hypervisor-present bit presented by the VMware virtual hardware.  Since virtual hardware 7, VMware has implemented this interface, which is required by the Microsoft SVVP program. FACT: Did you know VMware ESX 3.5u2 was the world’s first hypervisor to be qualified under the Microsoft SVVP program? However, as Microsoft continues…

We hope you enjoyed VMworld 2013 in Barcelona as much as we did! Our TAM customer community started VMworld 2013 with the exclusive and very popular TAM Day . This year, we were overwhelmed by the interest in TAM Day! More than 200 people attended and we are already planning for even more capacity for next year! Most popular were the NSX overview session by Paul Fazzone (VMware Vice President of Product Management for NSX) and our highly interactive Birds of a Feather…

VMware vCloud Blog: VMworld Europe 2013 – Day Three and Show Wrap-Up (http://blogs.vmware.com/vcloud/?p=2943)By  David Davis For those who haven’t read them yet, this post is part of a 4 part series of posts on VMworld Europe 2013 so make sure you read my VMworld Europe 2013 Day Zero , Day One , and Day Two Wrap Ups to stay up to date! On this third and final official day of VMworld Europe 2013, many started the day off with hands on labs (HoL) at 8:00am when they opened (which would later facilitate the 35,000 powered on virtual machines that the HoL hit later that day). From there, the day was filled with…

VMware vSphere Blog: Virtual SAN & Disk Groups (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10588)I had a number of questions and queries on VSAN over the past week at VMworld 2013 in Europe. Many of these questions related to the role of disk groups. I will try to answer a number of them in this post. The first question is what purpose do disk groups serve? Disk groups may be considered a container in which a relationship between SSD/PCIe flash devices and magnetic disks are formed. When a virtual machine is created, it is placed on magnetic disks/hard disks. However its I/O is accelerated through an…

On this second official day of VMworld Europe 2013, the morning kicked off with an empowering keynote by VMware President and COO, Mr Carl Eschenbah. Carl talked about how, 10 years ago, the first VMworld took place in San Diego, CA and had just 1,400 attendees. VMware Consulting Blog: 4 Ways To Overcome Resistance to the Cloud (http://blogs.vmware.com/consulting/?p=970)By Brett Parlier, Solutions Architect, VMware Professional Services There’s a lot of excitement about cloud computing right now, but I also run into an equal amount of trepidation. In particular, networking pros are worried that increasingly advanced automation will soon put them out of a job. This is just one of several common points of resistance to the big changes happening in IT. I want to talk about four of them and provide some advice on how to reframe the discussion for clients, colleagues, and…

VMware Accelerate: Constant Change in Technology Is the Steady State (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1402)The VMworld Barcelona TV crew caught up yesterday with Paul Chapman, VMware VP of Global Infrastructure and Cloud Operations. In this short video, he describes how VMware is challenged with the same IT complexities as other large, global corporations—we have to run the business on a day-to-day basis, take orders, ship products, recognize revenue and so forth. And, because internally we’ve solved real-world issues that resonate with many of our customers, we’re now in a position to share how to solve…

VMware vSphere Blog: Virtual SAN & support for Horizon View Desktops (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10585)We had an interesting announcement here at VMworld EMEA yesterday, where the audience was told that Horizon View version 5.3 will support and have interoperability with Virtual SAN (VSAN). This was a timely announcement as our performance engineering team just released some very impressive VDI numbers using VMware’s new Virtual SAN storage system and View Planner. In a nutshell, a 3 node VSAN cluster could host in the region of 90-100 desktops per host. More importantly the team observed linear…
