From the editors virtual desk

Hi everyone, been a pretty hectic week for me with november creeping (no pun intended) up on us like it has. I was fortunate to attend a local session on the new vCloud Suite 5.5 this week which went through the many facets of the suite and some of the features of the new individual technologies provided. The ones that struck me as most important for me to get to grips with are the vCAC solution for cloud automation, the new features in vCops with much better integration with many other technologies to provide a single pane of glass to manage the operations of a complex environment, possibly spanning private and public cloud infrastructures as well as some newer technologies that are not part of the suite but have requirements on it such as the IT Business Management suite.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look at this I urge you to do so as it could make a huge difference to your environment with a lot less effort than expected.

VMware vSphere Blog: Three Hosts, two VSAN Datastores! (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10748)For those of you who have been testing out VSAN , you may realize that a VSAN cluster creates one scale-out datastore across participating hosts. Well, while working on an internal Virtual SAN lab setup, and following my colleague William Lam’s  excellent vCenter bootstrap instructions,   I got into a situation where I had a single node vsanDatastore with my vCenter Server Appliance residing on it, and a VSAN enabled vSphere cluster with a second vsanDatastore(1). So how do I add my single node VSAN…

VMware Support Insider: Virtual Flash Feature in vSphere 5.5 (http://blogs.vmware.com/kb/?p=5850)With the vSphere 5.5 release a few weeks back a new feature called Virtual Flash was introduced. We put together this video which provides an overview of this new Virtual Flash feature  and its benefits in a vSphere environment. In essence, Virtual Flash allows you to accelerate virtual machine performance through the use of local SSD (Solid State) disks, which serve flash memory cache to chosen virtual machines running on the ESXi host. Virtual Flash Read Cache can supply low latency for extreme latency…

VMware End User Computing: Moving Beyond IOPs for VDI (http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/?p=4111)By Courtney Burry, Director of Product Marketing, and Tristan Todd, Reference Architect Engineer, End-User Computing, VMware When it comes to desktop virtualization, one of the places you will end up spending a lot of your time is on storage planning and design. Given that 50%+ of the cost associated with most VDI deployments comes from storage—it’s definitely worth the time and effort to do your homework in advance. But wading through the sea of storage vendors can often leave you wondering what’s…

(https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=10742)Hi, I’m happy to report that the vSphere 5.5 Hardening Guide has been released for General Availability. VMware vCloud Blog: How to Budget for Recovery-as-a-Service (http://blogs.vmware.com/vcloud/?p=2967)This is a guest post from vCloud Service Provider,  Bluelock . Budgeting for a new or unfamiliar project can be one of the hardest things to do.  If you budget too much, you risk not getting approval. If you budget too little, you risk losing out on the right solution. Budgeting for cloud-based DR can be especially hard, too, if you don’t have experience consuming the cloud and understanding it’s pay-as-you-go economics. If you’re looking at 2014 spending right now, you may be struggling to…

VMware Accelerate: Microsoft Windows 7 Migration: You Can’t Afford to Put it Off (http://blogs.vmware.com/accelerate/?p=1426)Author: Charles Barratt Almost every IT organisation I have worked with in recent years is struggling with the same question: How do we help the business see IT as a strategic partner rather than a cost centre? The looming April 2014 end of support date for Microsoft Windows XP and the requisite migration off to Windows 7 or 8.x presents an opportunity for IT to do just that—if IT leaders put in place the right end-user strategy. This strategy should address issues such as the consumerisation of IT, the…
