The OpenStack Atlanta Design Summit is here and the VMware OpenStack team is excited to be part of the summit. Here’s a quick summary of what’s new with VMware + OpenStack in Icehouse.
- VMware is the #4 contributor across all the Integrated (aka core) projects
- Newly added features
- Nova and Cinder VMware drivers support Policy Based placement of workloads and volumes. For example, you can create gold, silver, bronze tiers of storage, and VMs and volumes can be guided to land on specific tiers. This is a very simple yet powerful way to add “service levels” to your OpenStack offering.
- Glance can now use vSphere datastores to store images. This extends Glance image backend support to wide range of NFS, iSCSI, FC storage as well as Virtual SAN datastores. Using vSphere datastores for Glance reduces instance creation and snapshot time by using associated Nova-vCenter driver optimizations.
- Nova supports OVA format images while using vCenter driver.
- Ceilometer has been extended to collect stats from vCenter.
- Nova and Neutron have CI coverage run by VMware, listening to all code changes and not just VMware code changes.
