Hi everyone, its been a very busy week for me this week. My main focus has been on a number of health assessments which I try and do for my customers on a regular basis. These are extremely valuable and this time round because many of my customers are either in the process of upgrading to vSphere 5.5 or have just completed their upgrade the health assessment is even more important. These health assessments are available to any VMware customer either via their Technical Account Manager (TAM) or VMware Professional Services (PSO), if you have not had a health assessment done in your environment recently or ever then I suggest a chat with your TAM or VMware rep to see what can be done for you, it is a very worthwhile exercise.
It is a public holiday on Monday in Australia and I may be on leave either next weekend or the weekend after so if there is a bit of a delay in the next couple of newsletters please don't worry they haven't gone anywhere and will continue as normal.
Thanks again to all the Bloggers, vExperts and VMware TAMs for all of the help and support with the newsletter over the past 5 and a half years.
Have a great week everyone.
Virtually Yours

- VMware Cloud Ops Blog: How IT Can Transform “Trust Debt” into True Business Alignment (http://blogs.vmware.com/cloudops/?p=946)
By Kevin Lees In my previous post, 5 Ways Cloud Automation Drives Greater Cost and Operational Transparency , I wrote about how automation can help alleviate tension between IT and and the lines of business. Let’s continue to explore that theme as we look into ways to bring in tighter alignment between business objectives and IT capabilities. “Instead of cost centers that provide capabilities, IT organizations must become internal service providers supplying business-enabling solutions that drive…

- VMware Consulting Blog: Quick Tip: Change the Password on the vCNS Edge (http://blogs.vmware.com/consulting/?p=1498)
By Martijn Baecke, VMware Senior Consultant Deploying and managing a vCNS Edge device with vCloud Director is a pretty easy task. You just spin up the appliance, integrate it with vCenter and then hook it up to vCloud Director. Piece of vCAC! I was trying to dig deeper into the structure of how vCNS Edge devices work and wanted to log in to the Edge device itself. The only problem was fact that I couldn’t log into console of the Edge appliance that was deployed by vCNS manager on my virtual…
- VMware vCloud Blog: vCHS not affected by OpenSSL vulnerabilities except for Edge Gateway to Edge Gateway SSL VPN (http://blogs.vmware.com/vcloud/?p=3635)
We’ve determined that VMware Edge Gateway SSL VPN sessions that terminate on vCHS Edge Gateways are vulnerable to CVE-2014-0224. If you are not using SSL VPN Edge Gateway to Edge Gateway, you are not affected, as no other Edge Gateway functions are vulnerable: SSL load balancing and IPSec VPNs are not affected. We will remediate. The CVE-2014-0224 vulnerability allows a “man in the middle” attacker to force negotiation of weak key material for SSL VPN sessions between Edge Gateways, potentially…
- VMware vSphere Blog: Virtual Spring Cleaning – Organization within vSphere (https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12905)
As I talk with more and more of our customers, it seems like there is an increasing number of IT/VMware admins that are experiencing “growing pains” in their environments. This does not come as a surprise if we consider the rates in which technology is exploding. As a result of their growing pains, the questions are asked, “what can we do?”, “How can we keep our virtual environment organized?”, “How can we stay on top of the rate we need to be deploying virtual machines?” etc. There are…

- VMware vSphere Blog: Virtual SAN Automatic “Add Disk to Storage Mode” Fails (Part II) (http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/?p=12767)In part 1 of this article, we looked at an interesting scenario in which, despite having the Virtual SAN disk management setting set on automatic, Virtual SAN would not form disk groups around the disks present in the hosts. Upon closer examination, we discovered that the server vendor pre-imaged the drives with NTFS prior to shipping. When Virtual SAN detects an existing partition, it does not automatically erase the partitions and replace it with its own. This serves to protect from accidental drive…

Because perimeter-centric network security has proven insufficient, and micro-segmentation has to date been operationally and economically infeasible. With NSX, security teams, in…

After all, even with it set, it doesn’t prevent you from using the latest clock frequencies, deeper core counts, etc. – BUT – it does mask some of the latest instructions. This is where performance can be impacted. If you are hosting an application…

- Re: Heads Up – HP firmware update bricks Proliant servers mobos ()
I know what you mean, HP is terrible when it comes to software in general, their support page is one of the slowest I've ever seen and the support in general is very week - sometime I had to wait a weeks to solve my problems with HP C7000 series.
- Re: Heads Up – HP firmware update bricks Proliant servers mobos ()
HP is uniformly terrible at notifying customers of new SPP releases. I've been a server tech for going on six years, signed up for notifications on day 1, and have never seen one (nor has my boss). We weren't notified of this SNAFU either; we only found out when we manually checked for an updated release.
